The Licensing... (commercial specifically)
January 5th, 2009Right now, I am going to create an application for a non-profit organization that will use the final application with associated content that I develop throughout their community on a pay/subscription basis (multiple servers running basically the same product owned by the non-profit organization).
I am the contractor/developer/owner of my small business and am not "employed" by this organization. As I understand it, the LGPL license would cover the not-for-profit organizations; however, the distribution/subscription sub-leasing of my application I think would be questionable unless they were all not-for-profit as well?
I would like to buy a commercial license anyhow as this would be beneficial to my future endeavours, but I need to understand the terms and conditions of the licenses a little better:
#1. Would the non-profit-org application I have described above be covered under LGPL?
#2. For the open source license description, it states that "assets" cannot be used in part for other pieces of your application (or something along those lines). If I purchase the app, will the css/images/assets be available for use both inside and outside of the app? I specifically like the way that it generates rounded borders.
#3. Commercial: When stated that notices must not be removed, I believe it is safe to assume this is talking about the s within the source code and the related text documents (if the section/code specific to the is distributed)
(one line in the preview...missed the bulk of the answer)
Thanks.
1. Yes, I believe it would.
2. Yes, although the app would have to be using Ext somewhere.
3. Yes again. In the case of the LGPL, the Ext must be displayed anywhere you place your own . Here's the text from the LGPL: "For a Combined Work that displays notices during execution, include the notice for the Library among these notices, as well as a reference directing the user to the copies of the GNU GPL and this license document.".
